Close in view of the wall tents and boats in various states of construction at Lake Bennett. Note the ice that is in the process of going out.

Inscription verso: On June 1, 1898, the exodus of gold-seekers from Lake Bennett had began. Boats built, they had been waiting for the spring break-up. On May 29 the ice began to move. Next day a fleet of 800 boats set out for the 500 mile passage to Dawson City. By the end of the summer, more than 7,000 assorted craft had been registered going down stream. Three small sternwheel steamers were packed piece-meal over the mountain and reassembled at Lake Bennett to join the fleet. (Public Archives of Canada Photo).
