Black and white view of the scales and summit of the Chilkoot Pass. The image shows the masses of goods and wall tents at the base and the long line of stampeders climbing the golden staircase.
Inscription verso: A rattling good picture of the "scales" of the hike up the "Summit" of
Chilcoot [sic] pass, taken on one of the few "clear" days of '98 spring rush. There are two distinct trails. The left one being Chilcoot [sic] proper - the right was known as "Petersons' and not quite so steep but longer. On the Chilcoot [sic] steps were cut in the snow + all intervals were resting places - the black line on the left represents many hundreds of "packers" toiling to the Summit with the resting places well patronized. A little to left and top of picture are the cables of the tranway company. Duplicate.
