A photo of a burned-down building at the Fortymile townsite. In the foreground, a tourist information sign reads: "Fortymile Townsite, named for its location 40 miles downstream from Fort Reliance, where Harper, Mayo and McQuesten had their Trading Post. Fortymile was founded in 1887 when a group of prospectors came this way to investigate a rumoured gold strike. The community straggled along until 1896 when nearly everybody left for the Gold Fields." The fire took place in 1983.
